A loan helped to purchase agricultural inputs for pointed gourd cultivation.

Runa's story

Runa lives at a small village of Falakata in West Bengal. She is 29 years old, a hard-working mother of two children (one son and one daughter). She is an illiterate homemaker, can sign her name only. Her husband's occupation is farming and he works hard to meet the family needs. Her daughter is studying in grade 8 and her son works as a mason.

Runa's husband cultivates beans, gourds, cabbages, peas, and other seasonal vegetables to sustain his family. Runa also helps her husband in cultivation during busy seasons. The crops they grow are sold in the market and are their main source of income. The income generated by this agricultural business is almost all spent on household expenses and payment of other fees.

Now they have decide to grow pointed gourd which is very popular as a summer crop. Runa wants to get a huge profit from the cultivation of this crop in the summer season. So she wants to buy the necessary farm supplies and applied for a loan from Kiva’s partner BJS. She will purchase good quality seeds, fertilizers and pesticides for pointed gourd cultivation. She hopes this will improve her family’s financial condition and she will be able to purchase more farmland in future with the profit generated by this cultivation.

Runa is thankful to her lenders for their help.
