A loan helped to purchase compost and various insecticides.

María Alba's story

Every two weeks, the communal bank "Amigas Solidarias" (Supportive Friends) meets in Crucita Parish, Portoviejo Canton. The area is known for the beautiful beaches that surround this sweet place. The area is visited by many national and foreign tourists. It's known by the name “Crucita la Bella” (Lovely Crucita).

This is where señora María lives. She is 45-years old. Her husband passed away a number of years ago. Doña María and her husband had three children, who are now grown and live at home.

Doña María is a very industrious woman who has had to work hard to get her family ahead. She is a nurse at a state hospital; however, since her husband died, she and her children have had to continue his line of work, which is agriculture. They grow onions, peppers, melons, vegetables, corn and other produce. Doña María's children take care of the agricultural labors, and when she can, she also helps in the fields. In this way, she is able to get her family ahead and her children also have a source of income.

This loan will be used to purchase compost and various insecticides that the crops need to produce a good harvest.

Doña María has been with her communal bank for five years. She likes it because the loans come quickly. Her dreams are to continue getting ahead and for her family to lack for nothing.
