A loan helped to increase her working capital to buy cassava in larger quantities.

Agnes's story

Agnes B. is married and has 3 children. She has received no formal education. Agnes sells "gari" which she uses cassava to produce. The raw cassava is milled and the starch extracted from it. The milled cassava is then fried to become "gari". It is popularly eaten in the country around Elmina, and she has been selling it since 1990. Her husband is a cleaner at the university of Cape Coast.

Agnes uses her income to help her husband in paying rent, utility bills, and other basic expenses of the family. Agnes will use this loan to increase her working capital to buy cassava in larger quantities for processing and sale. With the new profits from her expanded business, Agnes plans to reinvest back into the business to increase her profit margin so as to meet the financial needs of her family.

In the picture, the sacks contain the cassava dough which is used for making "gari".
