Ilma Tomasa's story

Ilma is a hardworking woman of 42 who is married with 5 children (4 boys and one girl), who all live in the department of Sololá. Her business involves making traditional costumes (shirts and blouses amongst other things). It is a profitable business and she sells her clothing in the markets in her town. She has been running her business for fifteen years and has demonstrated this experience to her target market. She also grows vegetables (especially corn and beans) which enables her to earn most her income which she uses to support her family. She is applying for a loan of 10,000 quetzals to buy materials (thread, equipment, fabric amongst other things) for her traditional embroidery. Her ambition is to buy some land so she can build her own home and improve her family's living conditions.
