A loan helped a member to buy a special stand to display his fruits and vegetables.

Sabah's Group's story

Shaba, a young man from southern Iraq, is a member of this group of three men. He is 23 years old, single, and lives with his family according to tradition. To generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of his family, he has operated a fruit and vegetable shop for five years already.

Shaba would like to improve the shop with better storage and display of his goods, and so wants to buy a special stand used in shops similar to his. The stand will allow him to keep his products fresh and allow him to display them so that his customers have better views of and access to them. A loan from Relief International Microfinance Iraq will allow him to do this.

Relief International Microfinance Iraq offers 'group loans' for clients unable to provide a guarantor, thereby precluding individual loans. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about these borrowers has been altered for their protection. Relief International Microfinance Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
