A loan helped to buy three crates of beer.

Martha's story

The communal bank "Andrés Avelino Cáceres" is made up of responsible and hard-working people who make their families progress. Most of its members live and work in Cusco, a city known as a popular tourist resort as well as for its commercial activities and its traditional Inti Raymi festival. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Machu Picchu, is nearby.

Martha is 36 years old, married and has two children from her marriage. She was born in the province of Cusco, department of Cusco, and lives in her beautiful native city. Earlier, se sold clothes for the Niño Manuelito (Jesus) (*) and the statues of the Virgin and the saints, but now she has a new activity. Currently, her main economic activity is the sale of food products from her small grocery and her beer depot. She has already been working for two months in her new business and is doing very well. Today Martha applies for a loan to buy three crates of beer.

(*) Translator's note: A detailed explanation of the Niño Manuelito tradition is provided in a previous Kiva loan description: "Each Christmas Eve in the city's main square, Peru's largest popular art and crafts fair is held: the Santurantikuy Fair. Hundreds of artisans from various places in the Cusco area, as well as other regions of the country, come to show their beautiful and original creations, fruit of their creative spirit during the year, which are used to decorate nativity scenes in homes and institutions. The central figure of Cusco's Christmas fiesta is the Niño Manuelito."
