The Wolale Marakasso 4 group is made up of married women from the village of Cinzara in the San region of Segou, the fourth largest administrative region of the Republic of Mali. They live in traditional families and are all around 39 years old with at least 6 children each. They specialise in the cultivation of sesame. In order to generate higher profits from their agricultural activities, the group members decided to seek a loan from Soro Yiriwaso two years ago, and are seeking their second from them now. Portio- the second lady from the right sitting down, and wearing a yellow T-shirt- aims to use her loan to purchase a sufficient quantity of seeds, small tools and agricultural inputs from the large town market at San. Once the rainy season has passed, the harvest is stored for a while so that it rises in value before being sold at the large town markets of San and Dah and in the neighbouring towns. She takes cash sales from retail and wholesale customers whos generally come from large towns.The group members aim each to generate profits of 19,000 to 41,000 FCFA from the sales of their goods, and will use to repay the loan interest and to see to their families' everyday needs.
