In the State of Oaxaca, there is a community called San Miguel Soyaltepec which has a very large lake that provides a lot of fish and work every year. It is also well known because the Cerro de Oro hydroelectric dam is located there. Teresa de Jesus J. lives in this community. She is 28 years old, studied up to the third year of high school, and is married to Juan who works in the fields as a day laborer. They have two children who attend a local elementary school.
Teresa tells us that, a little over two and a half years ago, she decided to start working in her own business so that she could help her husband with their household expenses and pay for their children's education.
Teresa sells Mexican snacks (tostadas, gorditas, empanadas, tacos and stuffed chili peppers) from her home on Saturday evenings. The rest of the week she sells cosmetics and perfumes to her friends and neighbors in the community. She needs this loan to invest in buying tomatoes, chili peppers, onion, meat, tortillas, corn, beans, plantains, eggs, oil and gas for making her snacks. She also needs to buy catalogs, cosmetics and perfumes.
Teresa hopes that, with this investment, her business will prosper since she would like to provide her children with a better quality of life and, in the future, she would like to be able to pay for their university studies.
