The members of the Benkola group are married women with an average age of 41 and on average 2 children. They live with their husband and children in large traditional families and reside in the neighborhood of Fana Coura, in the town of Fana, sub-prefecture of Fana, Region of Koulikoro, Republic of Mali.
They know each other through their neighborhood and kinship. For the last few years they have been selling various items.
These women work in collaboration with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to continue their moneymaking activity. This is their eleventh group loan; all the previous loans have been fully reimbursed.
With this loan they wish to buy fruits and vegetables and a large quantity of clothing and socks. The fruits and vegetables are bought wholesale from the fret carriers coming from Lomé and leaving for Bamako. The clothing is bought in Bamako, the capital of Mali.
All the items are sold on the market place in Fana to customers made up of women and men.
They are planning for each one to make an average monthly profit of 40,000 CFA. The profits are in part reinvested in the activity and the other part goes to the family’s daily expenses.
