A loan helped a member to buy more crates of beer and soda.


Maria Nakiganda's Group's story

Maria, 42, is married and has two grown children. She rents a two room house where she is staying with 10 people. The family has access to electricity but no running water. Maria takes care of additional family members.

She has a pub selling soda and beer. Maria uses public transport to and from shopping, and selling to all categories of people both retail and wholesale. She buys soda and beer in Natete, one of the city suburbs.

She works seven days a week. On average, she receives 30 customers a day. She works in the outskirts of Kampala.

Maria has been in this business 10 years and with MCDT five years. She is servicing her 11th loan, working with the same group mates. Her monthly expenses include feeding the family, school fees, medication and rent for her home and business. Her business challenges include the rainy season which hinders her customers from coming for a drink.

Maria is hoping to see her business grow bigger and wants to start operating from her own home.
