Kiva Lending Team: Terrorism Alternatives
We loan because...
There are alternatives to terrorism and we make them possible.
Every day we hear news reports about the latest drone or air strikes on impoverished parts of Pakistan and Yemen. Why? A basic terrorist gets paid anything from food for themselves and their families to a few thousand dollars per year. In places where there are very few jobs, the simple promise of food is enough to garner support networks and plenty of recruits.
The goal of Terrorism Alternatives is to change the dynamic in these countries by simply increasing the status quo. We focus on the areas which are struck the most by air assaults, under the basic logic that those locations are the ones most in need of alternatives to terrorism. Unfortunately, many provinces (Yemen) and agencies (Pakistan) are unavailable on Kiva. Within Yemen, however, there are a few. Look for loans that are based in Mokala/Hadramout, Aden, and Sana'a (in that order), and look for early intervention opportunities, such as for widows with young children and no sources of income.
This list will be updated for both Yemen and Pakistan as we move forward. For those who are curious about the data we have based these suggestions on, please see the following links:
At least in Yemen, the vast majority of the loans you'll see are from the Al-Amal Microfinance Bank. Their Kiva page is here: www.kiva.org/partners/205
The bank's website is: www.alamalbank.com/index.php?lang=en
