Kiva Lending Team: Sustainable Phosphorus Metabolism
We loan because...
Phosphorus is an essential, finite and non-substitutable resource of life - constituting the foundation of food security for humanity.
However, it is tremendously mismanaged by the cheap prices on the global fertilizer market and the majority of it goes to waste - causing environmental problems instead of reaping benefits.
Check out this explanatory video:
Just as humanity consists of billions of individuals, the phosphorus challenge does too - which means EVERYONE can help. This team should stand together for nothing less than ensuring equitable food access in the future by decreasing P losses all around the world.
Follow Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Compost.
This means to fund kiva loans that match the following criteria:
+ organic fertilizer and composting (NO mineral fertilizer!)
+ biodigestion and sludge reuse
+ local agriculture to market loops
+ decentralized sanitation systems (DEWATS and Ecosan) for nutrient extraction from water, ideally with (safe!) sludge reuse, composting toilets etc
+ empowerement through access to education
+ organic agricultural products and farming practices
+ vegetarian products (NO more dairy, cattle or meat which increase manure production) unless the manure is reused directly
The list could be continued quite a bit. Please, help me updating the list/guidelines by commenting while we build up this team! :)
