A loan of $2,775 helped to produce organic coffee.

Alejandro's story

Alejandro has worked in organic agriculture for 10 years. He is married and has 6 daughters. Alejandro is an FCC certified organic coffee grower.

To improve his organic process, he needs to buy machinery that will facilitate activities at the farm. He also wants to buy a cow to use the manure as raw material to produce organic compost and therefore yield good coffee, increasing both production and quality. This investment will cost him 5,600,000 million pesos.

Alejandro is a grower who is committed to protecting the environment and he is convinced that clean and healthy agriculture is worth it. That is why he also wants to finish building an agro-ecological demonstration garden where he can train and show that organic agriculture is possible. At the family level, he would like to improve his family's quality of life and support his daughters in finishing their schooling.

The organic coffee conversion and production is a long term process that allows farmers to be independent, healthy, balanced and environmentally friendly, which represents a challenge to Colombian farmers. Alejandro has decided not to risk his health, his family's or his consumers' any more by continuing to use chemicals. Kiva's field partner Federación Campesina del Cauca (FCC) is convinced that it is worth supporting and fortifying these alternate initiatives. A Kiva loan represents a sustainable future for production, the land and his family.
