Benkadi Group's story

The women of the Benkadi group are all married, have an average age of 32, on average 3 children and all live in traditional, extended family settings, in the town of Fana, district of Fana-coura, Koulikoro region (second administrative region of the republic of Mali).

The women have gotten to know each other thanks to family and neighbourly relationships, and bonds of friendship. They sell tubers, clothing and fresh fish. The Benkadi group is on its 5th group loan.

The customer Kadiatou, second from the left in the picture, plans to buy a bale of second-hand clothing from the resellers at Fana, so that she can sell them on from her own home and the market in Fana, for cash or credit, to a clientele composed of men and women. She expects to earn an average monthly profit of 40 000 francs, some of which will be used to take care of her family's needs, and some of which will be reinvested in her sales business.
