Forty-two year old Juana is illiterate because, due to scarce financial resources, her parents weren't able to send her to school. From a young age she worked with her mother in the kitchen and with her father growing coffee. She married at the age of 15 and had 9 children. Her husband died 2 years ago and she lives with her children.
Juana's sister-in-law told her about the Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidas por la Vida. This year she invested her first loan in stocking her store with basic products such as sugar, cooking oil, salt, bottled water, carbonated water and candy.
Juana is the leader of Flor de Jazmin 2 group which is made up of 3 Maya Ixil women. The group will invest 33% in agriculture, 33% in textiles and 34% in retail sales. On average each group member has 3 children, the average member age is 33 years, 67% are illiterate and 33% did not complete primary school.
