Nicole's story

I didn’t set out to open a butcher shop. I came to this work through years of listening—to parents who were trying their best to feed their children well and felt confused, discouraged, or priced out of the kind of food they wanted to serve. Through my background in health and nutrition, I saw how deeply food affects not just physical health, but confidence, connection, and dignity. I also came to know farmers who were raising animals with care and integrity, yet struggling to survive in a system that often made it difficult for their care and hard work to be fully recognized. Standing at the intersection of those experiences, I felt a responsibility to build something that could close that distance and bring families and farmers back together around food they could trust—and to help people feel confident and capable in their own kitchens again.

Whole Harvest Meats grew one conversation at a time. I built it by showing up, learning names, listening to stories, and earning trust. I talk with customers every day about feeding their families, stretching a budget, managing health concerns, and feeling good about what’s on the table. Much of that work is about restoring traditional foodways—encouraging people to get their hands back into their food, to cook, preserve, and understand what they are feeding their families, rather than feeling disconnected from the process. I work closely with local farmers, knowing that when this shop succeeds, it helps keep their farms going too. As more people have come to rely on us, our small space has begun to limit how much we can do, and stepping into a larger, more accessible location allows us to continue serving our community while also creating room for education and shared learning. My hope is not to change what we’ve built, but to deepen it—to create space for connection, knowledge, and food people can trust, and to build something lasting that honors the relationships it was built on.
