A loan of $3,000 helps to buy a half hectare of rice paddy to grow short duration rice.
Tola's story
Tola is 38 years old and has been a farmer for 15 years. At the moment he farms short duration rice on four hectares of land. He is able to plant his rice twice a year and after a period of 90 days can harvest four tons of crops per hectare for sale. The crops are sold directly to his local merchant who buys from his village.
To get more tons of rice for sale on the market, he has borrowed 12,000,000 KHR in order to buy a half hectare of rice paddy to grow more short duration rice. Next time, he will be able to plant rice on up to 4.5 hectares of land and harvest an extra two tons from this new farming land.
