Perla De Oro 4 Group

Perla De Oro 4 Group's story

Sonia is 40 years old.  Her parents were not able to give her the opportunity to study, because they had significant financial limitations.  Ever since she was very young, Sonia was picking coffee beans with her father in order to help with the family's expenses.

Sonia united with her partner when she was 16 years old, and they have 7 children.  She found out about the loans for women offered by the Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidas por la Vida (ACMUV) from her mother-in-law.  Her first and second loans were used to buy coffee seedlings, and she used the third loan to maintain her coffee crops.  This year, she will invest her 4th loan in expanding her bakery, buying supplies such as flour, yeast, fats, salt, and sugar.

Sonia is the leader of the "Perla de Oro 4" communal bank.  This group has 3 members who are all women of the Ladina ethnicity.  This group will invest these funds in textiles (67%) and retail sales (33%).  On average, each member of the group has 4 children, and the average age of the members is 48.  Two-thirds of the members are illiterate, and a third did not complete primary school.
