Lucesitas 4 Group

Lucesitas 4 Group's story

Juana is 48 years old. She grew up with five sisters, and her parents were unable to send her to school, so she is illiterate.

From a young age, she worked with her entire family cleaning and harvesting coffee, helping to cover family expenses.

She began living with her partner when she was 15 years old, and they have three children.

A member of the Asociación Chajulense de Mujeres Unidas por la Vida informed Juana about the loans the Association offers to women. This year she will receive her second loan; she has used both loans to purchase thread for making tunics.

Juana is the leader of the Lucesitas 4 group, which is made up of four women, all from the Maya Ixil ethnic group. The group will invest 50% in textiles and 50% in retail sales. On average, each group member has two children, and the average age of the members is 45. Twenty-five percent are illiterate, 25% completed eighth grade, 25% completed secondary education through eleventh grade, and 25% completed twelfth grade.

In this group: Juana, María Cristina, Petrona Anabely, Sofia Everilda
