Triunfadoras De La Colonia Group's story
Monica is 30 years old, is married, and is the mother of eight children; she had the first one at age 16. Five of the children are in different grades in school, from kindergarten to eighth grade, while the three youngest are not in school yet. Monica had six years of education, which she interrupted due to the economic situation of her family and her marriage. Her husband works as a day laborer.
For the last six years, Monica has been buying and selling pork in a rented shop. In the end of the year season, she sells by order and delivers the orders to houses, with the help of her husband and two of the children. For the last four years she has also sold seasonal fruits, corn on the cob, snacks, and lunches on foot, three times a week. She is asking for her first Kiva loan to buy more pigs and satisfy increased demand. Her goal is to strengthen her businesses and buy her own shop.
Monica is the secretary of the group and there are eight more K'iche' Maya women who make up the Friendship Bridge state Trust Bank “Triunfadoras de la Colonia” (for the state of Suchitepéquez). These women have different businesses, including selling typical clothing, firewood, tortillas, casual new and used clothing, snacks, and food. The women will be able to receive a variety of training in the "Microcredit Plus" program, which will help them to follow this path firmly.
