Ruth's story

Ruth is 37 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She is married and has 6 children, with 5 of them currently in school.

For the past 15 years, Ruth has been working diligently to manage her bar, which serves alcoholic beverages. To help expand her business, Ruth has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more alcohol to sell. This will help Ruth to generate greater profits and will assist her in educating her children.

Ruth hopes that in the future she will be able to construct a residential house. She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program which primarily serves small-group members like her, who do not have collateral for commercial loans but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
