A loan of $1,125 helps to buy matoke (green plantains), posho (maize flour), rice, beans, meat, peanut butter, and other ingredients.

Mariam's story
Mariam is 44 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in Uganda's central region. She is married and has 3 children who are all currently in school.
For the past 10 years, Mariam has worked hard to run her cafeteria, which offers a variety of food options. To help expand her business, Mariam has requested a loan of 400,0000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy matoke (green plantains), posho (maize flour), rice, beans, meat, peanut butter, onions, tomatoes, and spices for added flavor. And it will help Mariam to generate greater profits and improve her family's standard of living by providing them with enough food. Mariam hopes to buy a piece of land and build a house of her own in the future.
She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program, which primarily serves small-group members like her who lack collateral for commercial loans but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
