Bitaminsi

Bitaminsi's story

Bitaminsi is 27 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in the Central region of Uganda. She is married and has 3 children, with 2 of them currently in school. For the past 10 years, Bitaminsi has been working hard to manage her grocery store, which sells raw food. To help expand her business, Bitamisi has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more bananas (including matooke, commonly known as plantain, a staple), sweet potatoes, and vegetables for resale, and will help Bitaminsi to generate greater profits and improve on her family's standards of living by providing them enough food and more basic needs. Bitaminsi hopes that in the future she will be able to acquire land and build a residential house. She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program, which primarily serves small-group members like her, who do not have collateral for commercial loans but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
