Claire's story

Claire is 38 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in the Central region of Uganda. She is married and has five children, with three of them currently in school. For the past six years, Claire has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells household supplies like rice, pasta, snacks and cooking oils.

To help expand her business, Claire has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more household supplies like rice, pasta, snacks, cooking oils, salad dressings, sauces, spreads, herbs, spices, seasonings, breakfast cereals, jam, honey, sugar and salt for sale, and will help Claire to generate greater profits.

Claire hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business more to a bigger wholesaler and increase her savings. She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program, which primarily serves small-group members like her, who do not have collateral for commercial loans but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
