A loan of $5,225 helps a member to purchase new, trending skirts.

Estrellas Nahuala Group's story
Wendy, thirty-two years old, is married to a day laborer and is the mother of three children (ages 6 to 16). She has been selling new traditional clothing for ten years. She sells at her house in a rural zone in the department/state of Sololá. Wendy understands the enormous value of a good education, as she went to school and graduated as an accountant. Her children are students from kindergarten to the third grade! With her first Kiva loan, Wendy can purchase more cortes, also called traditional skirts.
As secretary of the Friendship Bridge communal bank Estrellas de Nahuala, Wendy helps and is responsible for the monthly payments of the loans of the other seven Maya K'iche women. Her groupmates weave, embroider and sell traditional textiles. As a fundamental part, they empower themselves in the monthly meetings with interactive educational training in the Microcrédito Plus program of loans, education and medical care, essential for their success as women, mothers, and entrepreneurs.
They learn about different daily topics such as hygiene, health, nutrition, the use of medicinal plants, and women's rights and roles. They also acquire effective business management practices. Every two months, the women have access to basic health services. This is especially important as the Guatemalan health system is underfinanced and at the limit of its resources.
All Kiva lenders are highly valued.
