Flor De Maravilla Group's story

31-year-old Jennifer, a mother of 2 children who are 4 and 10 years old, is proud that her oldest son is in the 4th grade. She only attended school for six years, but did not continue because her parents lacked financial resources.

Her husband works on a banana farm in the department/state of Suchitepequez. For two years, Jennifer has sold personal care products and disinfectants from a catalog. Four months ago, she added a business making delicious chocolate-covered fruit that she sells from her home. Her goal is to open her business in its own storefront.

Jennifer requests her first Kiva loan to buy body cream, lotion, shampoo, and disinfectants.

Seven women elected Jennifer to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Flor de Maravilla”. Most of these women sell firewood, used for cooking and heating. Others prepare and sell regional snacks and complete meals. Since they have little or no formal education and healthcare can be challenging to access, they benefit greatly from monthly educational trainings and bi-monthly healthcare services. Recent topics for the training were about the risks of over-indebtedness and women’s preventive disease measures. Other topics are about business, health, hygiene, nutrition, and women’s issues. Every other month, they have access to basic healthcare services, including exams, consults, and family planning.
