A loan of $9,000 helps a woman-owned business (& 2x Kiva borrower) continue building its commercial space by adding a wax room.

Chrystina's story
I grew up in small town Iowa in an all too familiar tale of divorced parents and abandonment issues. From all of that, I knew I wanted to create something bigger than myself. This journey started by leaving my small town for Atlanta, GA, and the International School of Skin & Nailcare. I was interested in makeup artistry which led me to esthetics, but waxing hooked me. I was good at it and I enjoyed it. Shortly after graduation, I began working for a Fortune 500 waxing company in two large cities. I excelled in client retention, time-efficient waxing, and product sales, but the environment felt impersonal and more about money than people. I am a firm believer that if you focus your sincere attention on the people, the money will come all on its own. From that, the seeds of Gaia Waxing were planted.
I became a single mother and had to move back home for any of this to become realized. So, I utilized my tax return to buy the few little necessities to start - wax table, wax pot, sticks, cotton rounds - and I began waxing Loras college students out of my mom’s attic. It was a very humble beginning, but it got me started and allowed me to build a reputation for being an excellent waxer in a new area until I could afford a small room (7’ x 4’) in a salon. It wasn’t the best part of town, but it was a step up from in-house, and it allowed me to begin advertising a real wax room.
