Flores Lindas Group's story

Fifty-year-old Sonia, a proud mother of four grown children ranging in age from twenty-five to thirty-four, has twelve grandchildren. Her children have an average of six years of formal education. She only attended school for three years because her parents could not afford to send her for additional years. She is married to a farmworker. Seven years ago, Sonia opened her traditional textile business. She sells complete, colorful outfits and traditional skirts (“cortes”) from her home and as a street vendor. She also sells jewelry. Her goals are to expand the business and create additional income. Sonia is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more complete outfits in anticipation of increased sales during the holidays.

Six women elected Sonia to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Flores Lindas.” They sell tortillas, chicken per pound, regional meals, jewelry, and traditional textiles. The ladies learn a great deal from monthly educational training, and recent topics concern business administration, avoiding over-indebtedness, women’s health, and nutrition. They feel fortunate to have bi-monthly visits with a nurse who offers them a variety of services, including exams, consultations, and family planning in the “Microcredit Plus” program that combines loans with education and healthcare.

Sonia and her friends appreciate the generosity of Kiva lenders from around the world. Thank you to each of you!
