Pasajoc Group's story

Many of the women who participate in Friendship Bridge's  "Microcrédito Plus" program began to work when they were young, and continue in what later became profitable businesses. Such is the case of Dominga (age 39). She is a member of the K'iche' ethnic group and lives in a rural part of the department / state of Totonicapán. Dominga is married and the other of a child, age 24, who finished seventh grade. She studied up to fourth grade of primary school. She married when she was very young devoted herself to the home.

20 years ago, Dominga saw the opportunity to generate income in agriculture, raising animals (chickens, pigs, and sheep) that she sells from her home. 10 years ago, she added two new businesses: embroidering traditional blouses called “huipiles” and sewing by machine. These businesses are growing and Dominga needs a fifth Kiva loan to increase her capital. She will buy feed for the animals and thread.

In the communal bank "Pasajoc" of Friendship Bridge, there are nine women who attended the beginning grades of school. Despite their lack of education, they progress thanks to their small businesses raising animals, making textiles, selling Mayan clothing, and owning convenience stores. The women benefit from monthly training and health services.  Dominga says:  "Topics such as business management, entrepreneurship, avoiding being used as a "front man", and self-esteem help me achieve success.
