Las Cumplidoras Group's story
Gabina, 58, is married and has four children over the age of twenty. Three of her older children are high school graduates, while the other only completed sixth grade. All four are now married, and she is a grandmother of five.
Animal husbandry is a profitable and sustainable venture, especially in rural areas of the region of Quiché where Gabina lives. For this reason, she began raising free-range chickens 28 years ago, which she sells from her home. To diversify her income, eight years ago Gabina started buying and selling traditional clothing from home. She soon discovered that selling traditional clothing not only generated income, but also promoted the cultural dress of her community.
Today, her dream is to grow both businesses even further. That is why she is requesting her fifth Kiva loan, to buy more traditional clothing in different colors and designs for the Christmas season, a time when demand increases and she wants to satisfy her customers' tastes.
The Friendship Bridge Communal Bank “Las Cumplidoras,” group is composed of eight women who speak Spanish. They raise animals and buy and sell traditional clothing.
