A loan of $15,000 helped to enable smallholder farmers to access market and finance, earning an income and having a credit history built for them for the first time.

Greenfingers Mobile's story

The underlying issues are smallholder farmers (SHFs) lacking connections to large buyers and not having the required working capital to produce at a larger scale. GreenFingers Mobile (GFM) specifically solves for inefficient paper and pen farmer management systems that prevent contracts with large buyers and fail to produce transparency in the value chain.

GFM is a System as a Service (SaaS) platform for SHF management that allows the storing of important farmer profile data, baseline livelihood information for impact assessments, technical assistance and commercial exchanges that lead to the building of credit records.

GFM provides:
• Transparency within the farm to fork value chain
• Commercial exchange records for farmer credit worthiness
• Real-time statistics from the field
• Reduced risk of cash and data loss
• Change of livelihood measurements of farmers
• Simple, quick reporting to stakeholders
• Confidence for food buyers thus ability to secure farming contracts

Since late 2016, over 8,700 SHFs have been brought into contract farming, and are now earning an income and having their commercial exchanges recorded; changing the lives of over 50,000 people. Nearly 60,000 commercial transactions have been recorded providing these SHFs with credit records that enable access to customized microfinance. GFM’s aim is to positively impact the livelihoods of over 900,000 people in Africa within the next three years.
