A loan of $30,000 helped increase smallholder farmers’ incomes by buying unsold fruit that would otherwise go to waste and selling it as dried fruit.

Jakana Foods's story

The Problem

Small holder farmers in Sub Saharan Africa struggle to earn revenues due to lack of support and access to the markets. Additionally, post harvest losses to the extent of 40 per cent affects their ability to earn higher revenues.

The Solution

Jakana Foods is a leading Ugandan producer and exporter of tropical fruit products such as all natural fruit juice and organic certified dried fruit. Drying fruit allows farmers to create a new healthy and delicious product which consumers love. It also avoids waste and allows farmers to sell 100% of their harvests. Their fruit is 100% organic, and fair trade certified.

Loan use and impact

The loan will enable Jakana Foods to acquire two commercial dehydrators which will help them to order 3x certified fruit from their farmers, especially in the high season for a premium organic price. This will increase farmer’s income by at least 10% and help Jakana Foods to further reduce the significant wastage of fruit on farms throughout Uganda.
