A loan of $500 helped to purchase cereals and sell at her local market.

Hellen's story

Hellen is a respected farmer from the Nandi Hills area of Kenya. She is single smallholder farmer and depends on mixed farming to make a living. Hellen earns her income through selling milk and eggs at her local market. She is committed to her business and has gained great market intelligence. Hellen has realized that she could increase her profits by selling cereals at her local market.

By acting as an intermediary between cereal farmers and customers, she is able to generate additional income so that she can expand her farm. Basically, in the trade, she assembles cereal produce from local farmers and sells to her network of buyers at a higher price. She is seeking a loan to buy cereals produced by local farmers which she will later sell at a higher price, using her understanding of the market conditions and prices.

She hopes to make much profit since she has been in the sales business for a long time and possesses good customer-relationship skills.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals and farming equipment.
