A loan helped provide clean water to nearly 50,000 rural Cambodians.

Hydrologic Clean Water's story

In Cambodia, 80% of people lack access to clean water. Untreated water and poor sanitation cause up to 10,000 deaths each year, mostly among children under the age of five.

Hydrologic is a female- and locally-led social enterprise that provides access to clean water in rural Cambodia. It produces the Super Tunsai ceramic water filter, which removes bacteria, reducing disease, and alleviates the burden on women and children who would otherwise boil water. Additionally Hydrologic sells carbon credits to entities and people seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.

To date, Hydrologic provided clean water access to over 200,000 Cambodians, 85% of clients are female, and enabled 1,234,056 tonnes in carbon emissions avoided.

Kiva's loan will enable Hydrologic to sell 1,000 filters per month which would translate to 48,000 additional people getting access to safe drinking water in a year. In addition, every water filter sold contributes to 0.6 tons of carbon emission avoided. Hydrologic has received two loans from Kiva through lending partner iDE Global, the first was a $75,000 Covid Support Loan and the second one was $150,000 to invest in a gas kiln to improve their production. This is Hydrologic’s first direct loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It enables households in Cambodia to gain access to clean drinking water while reducing carbon emissions.
