Girasoles De San Juan Group
A loan of $4,475 helped a member to buy organic fertilizer and seeds.
Girasoles De San Juan Group's story
23-year-old Dora is married to a bricklayer. They have 4 children (2-9 years old) who are studying in kindergarten to the 6th grade. Because Dora has a 6th grade education, she feels her children need a good education for a prosperous future. To support their education, Dora cultivates flowers and sells them inside and outside her community. She is fortunate to be able to cultivate her flowers year-round since she has a well to provide the water they need. Dora is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy organic fertilizer and seeds.
Dora is Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Girasoles de San Juan" that includes 6 other ladies who all speak Spanish (the formal language of Guatemala), except for one who speaks the native Kaqchikel language of the area. The group meets monthly to participate in the "Microcredit Plus" program of loans, education, and healthcare services. A facilitator provides essential training in business management, women's issues, or good health habits by using role-playing, diagrams, pictures, and games. The business skills help them with their businesses selling tortillas, selling personal care products by catalog, cultivating flowers, or selling traditional clothing.
Bi-monthly they see a visiting nurse who provides exams, consultations, or screenings that are part of the "Health for Life" program.
Happy Holidays to each of you, Kiva investors, who provide the opportunity for success in these ladies' lives!!!
