A loan helped To provide Salvadoran farmers and fishers with income security and El Salvador with food security in the wake of Tropical Storms and COVID-19.

Acceso El Salvador's story

More than 80% of all food producers in El Salvador are smallholder farmers with little information about final retail markets. Without knowledge of a fair price for their products, small farmers are vulnerable to market middle-men. In addition, small farmers often have low production capacity, higher incidence of plagues within crops, and lack of know-how for proper irrigation methods. In 2020, farmers faced Tropical Storm Amanda and COVID-19. Acceso El Salvador is the leading smallholder farmer sourcing company in El Salvador and the only end-to-end social business working with farmers along every aspect of the value chain. Acceso seeks to bridge the gap between buyers and smallholder farmers and fishers, adding value to supply chains through the efficient aggregation of products, boosting production quality and volumes, and providing logistical solutions to ensure timely deliveries. To date, Acceso El Salvador has generated USD $13.9 million in cumulative farmer income and served over 4,200 farmers. See more in this video. This loan of $200,000 will be used to provide more flexible credit and allow farmers to rebound from the devastating impact of Tropical Storms and COVID-19. It is Acceso El Salvador’s third loan through Kiva’s Labs: Social Enterprises program. View their previous loans here and here.
