A loan helped To improve incomes for farmers in war-torn areas of rural Colombia and ensure food security for Colombian citizens during COVID-19.
Acceso Colombia's story
In Colombia, where the rural poverty rate is 35%, smallholder farmers in war-torn regions lack the adequate technical skills, tools, and capital to improve their yields and access markets. Acceso Colombia is a social agribusiness that bridges the market gap between urban buyers and rural farmers with the goal of lifting them out of poverty. Acceso sources fruits and vegetables from smallholder producers in the Andean and Caribbean regions, paying on average a 20% premium to farmers. Many of Acceso’s producers are displaced, victims of the guerilla conflict, Afro-Colombians, or women. Acceso provides technical assistance to boost production quality and volumes, aggregates produce, and provides sustainable access to large food companies in Bogota, Medellin, and Barranquilla. They work with over 450 farmers to provide Colombians with critical food security during COVID-19. The pandemic has increased the threat of food shortages in Colombia, making Acceso’s work essential during the crisis. This loan of $50,000 will provide Acceso with working capital to distribute high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs to farmers and to prevent delays in serving their customers in the aftermath of the COVID period. This loan is special because: Greater market access and higher farmer wages alleviates poverty and addresses food shortages.
