What do Kiva Interns do?

Kiva Interns dedicate approximately 5 months, part-time, to provide support to their team managers and contribute to in-depth projects and processes that will help them build a career in the International Development, Technology, Nonprofit, and Social Enterprise fields. The specific projects and processes an intern works on depend on the position he/she is selected for. These could include positions working in program management, marketing and communications, community support, or in areas of product management, development, or microfinance partnerships. Regardless of the role, the program’s focus is the same: to provide a great career development experience that leverages interns' existing talents and enables them to hone new ones.

While interns work on high impact projects with their teams, the Kiva Internship Program also provides interns with the unique opportunity to participate in the following programs:

  • Education - Fireside Chats: Kiva staff members share how they got to Kiva, what their role is, more about their specific team, and provide opportunity for Q&A. Access to a variety of other educational resources to learn more about microfinance and international development.
  • Professional Development - Skill-building workshops, resume reviews, network of over 300 Kiva Intern alums, introduction to a network of mission focused non-profits and tech startups.
  • Social Experiences - Intern breakfasts, off site excursions, happy hours, lunches in the park, alumni events.
"Being an intern with Kiva is one of the most rewarding and eye opening experiences a young professional can undertake. The caliber and work ethic of the Kiva community is inspiring and will undoubtedly inspire you to test your limits and push yourself in a number of ways." - Former Kiva Intern, 2014

Application Process

When Kiva hires to fill internship roles, we have some positions that require a specific skill set and others that fit into a more general pool. It is the Internship Program's responsiblity to match your skills, experience, and interests with Kiva's team and project needs. Please apply to the general Kiva Internship job description unless you have a specific skill set that matches the individual internship roles posted online.

It is
important to note that internship positions do not turn into staff positions at Kiva. If there is a position that becomes available at the time a volunteer is working at Kiva, we would consider current or former interns as we would any other applicant applying externally. We've found it is important to set expectations appropriately very early on in the discussion with potential interns. That said, Kiva invests in the preparation of interns for their next opportunity, whether at Kiva or elsewhere.
