• Register at http://www.kiva.org, if you are not already signed up as a Kiva user.
• Use the same email address and password to sign up on Viva, Kiva’s Volunteer Translation Website, and complete your translator profile there.
• After your profile is reviewed by Kiva staff, you may be contacted to take a short translation test. We will keep all information on file and will contact you as we need additional team members for each language.

• High-level proficiency in a foreign language and Native-level writing skills in English
• Some translation experience helpful, but not required. (Experienced translators may be given special assignments.)
• Special interest in non-US residents to expand our volunteer operations worldwide

• Able to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week
• Check email frequently
• Comfortable with new technology
• Minimum 6-month commitment, prefer one year

• Current languages needed: Kiva's translation teams are currently full, but we greatly appreciate your interest in volunteering. As our Field Partnerships grow, we will be welcoming new volunteers to the teams. Please feel free to register or check back later.
• We are also accepting registrations for languages that Kiva may need additional help with in the future: Arabic, Armenian, Bahasa Indonesia, Dari, French, Khmer, Mongolian, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu, Vietnamese and more.

Kiva Volunteer Translators currently translate sets of loan profiles that Kiva Field Partners have posted on the Kiva website. Each profile provides a brief overview of the entrepreneur's background and their microbusiness. You can review examples on Kiva’s Lend page.

Loans are posted to Kiva's website directly by Field Partners daily. The turnaround time we need varies from 1 to 5 days, depending on the season and loan volume.

Through your Viva Volunteer Profile, you can select the days you want to volunteer and keep us informed about your vacation or other extended periods away from your computer. The system gives you the maximum amount of flexibility and allows us to respect your schedule as we make translation assignments.

Volunteers review and translate Kiva loans on their personal computers from their homes, offices, local coffee shops, the beach, etc., using Kiva's web interface.

As long as your reading skills in the language you translate from are very strong, and your writing skills in English are good, you do not need translation experience. In fact, this is a good way to get some practice doing translations, if you would like to build your skills in that area. Most of the material we ask you to translate is very general, and we have an online community so that you can consult with other Kiva volunteers about any terminology problems or other translation questions.

For professional translators, or translation students, we sometimes have more specialized assignments for you. We also might ask you to help provide feedback to other volunteers, if that’s something you would enjoy doing.
