Innovation
Innovation is critical in any field, and microfinance is no exception.
Kiva targets Field Partners that strive to constantly provide innovative products and services specifically tailored to the needs of the people they serve. Several studies show that offering complementary non-credit services, such as savings or insurance, can enhance the impact of financial services.
Innovative products and services include a wide variety of possibilities from mobile banking products that allow borrowers to send and receive loan payments through text messages, to micro-insurance products that Field Partners offer to protect those they serve against catastrophic events. It is not necessary for the Field Partners to provide the services directly. These services can be offered in partnership with another organization. One innovation is mobile banking which in some counties is allowing people to transact through their mobile phone. As providers of financial services to often excluded populations, microfinance institutions and other organizations are in a unique position to also provide other innovative services.
Field Partners who offer innovative and technology-based financial solutions to the people they serve are awarded the Focus on Innovation badge by Kiva.
