grandma, feminist, liberal activist, biologist, and retired landlady
I loan because:
"The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Over the years, I've become a feminist and reproductive and GLBT rights advocate. I've taught biology, worked as an educator for Planned Parenthood, and been a landlady. I'm married and raised two sons. I"ve lived briefly in Nepal, Yorkshire England, and northern Greece. I've learned to do plumbing (working with water pipes and such), electrical, and other building maintenance tasks. Now I can spend more time with my grandchildren, fixing up my own house - and being an international microfinancier on Kiva !
About my screen name. When I joined my first team, now called the A+ team, and made a few posts, there was another Susan posting as well. My profile pic showed me on a ladder doing wiring. To help people discern which messages belonged to which Susan, I became Susanwithladders. On our last working trip to Kathmandu, (my husband was working with the Urban Planning Department at the engineering college of Tribhuvan University, we were there during very severe shortages of all fuels, and rolling electrical blackouts. One morning before shops opened, I noticed plastic containers lined up along the curb. It turned out that the word was that a shipment of kerosene had arrived. Rather than stand in yet another line, people ran a long cord through the handles of the plastic jugs to keep their jugs' places in the lines. The photo I took of those jugs seemed to me to be a fitting reminder of how tough life often is for Kiva borrowers. So, I then became SusanNepaliKeroseneQueue. The photo is my default profile pic.
