I loan because:
I believe in the value of helping people help themselves. With regards to effectiveness, “the fact that [microcredit] has survived commercially, I take that more seriously than any other piece of evidence” (Tyler Cowen, economics professor at George Mason University, and blogger at Marginal Revolution). In other words, there is demand for the services offered by microfinance institutions. This is a part of my pledge to donate at least 5% of my gross income to charities helping the poor, as part of an effort to lead an ethical life (as described in Peter Signer's book The Life You Can Save). A large portion of my charitable contributions will go to Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders and organizations ranked highly by GiveWell, with a small portion going to local charities helping people in my community.
