A loan helped a member to purchase 40 chickens and feed.

Un Futuro Mejor Group's story

In Oaxaca, there is a very significant region dedicated to sugar cane production where, in the harvest season, they burn, cut and transport the product to the mill. There is where it undergoes a process to finally get sugar which they sell to the big factories as well as molasses.

Some blocks from the factory, a group has formed to ask for VF México's support to invest in its work. Its name is Un Futuro Mejor [A Better Future] and refers to the objectives that they have in mind. The members are Ernesto and Everado who work selling groceries; Alicia, Tirso and Roberto, clothing; Dulce, lingerie and shoes; Teresa, chickens and groceries; Victoria, tacos; Jacinto, snacks, and Claudia, cosmetics.

Teresa is known by all her neighbors as Tere and, with her husband Benjamín, has a child who depends on the couple. She has worked raising and selling chickens for more than three years, for which her husband built a corral in the backyard of their home. Since then, she has always managed to maintain an acceptable quantity of animals since her customers tend to ask for many specimens. At this time, the loan will be invested in the purchase of 40 chickens and feed sufficient for their healthy development.

In order to satisfy her customers' needs, she begins her work at 5 in the morning from Monday to Saturday. The process is usually complicated but, thanks to her experience, now she does it in a simple way, always respecting the quality standards. She also is in charge of a grocery store which previously belonged to her mother-in-law. In general, the whole family works to help each other. The earnings have allowed them to remodel their house, pay for their son's education and save to pay for a surgery that is scheduled. With these words, she expresses her feelings, "I am grateful each day to God for the great opportunity He has offered me when He gave me life, for making it possible for us to get loans, and for the great family He has given me."

*The members of the group decided to take their photo on Boni's patio. Tere is the one wearing a pink checkered blouse.
