A loan of $525 helped to purchase tubers of yam and garments of clothing to sell.

Mary's story

Mary A. is twenty–seven years old. She is single and lives independently. Mary lives in a rented apartment in a commercial town called Bekwai, close to Obuasi (a gold mining town) in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Most of the inhabitants of Bekwai work in commercial activities.

She trades in fresh yam and garments of clothing to make an income to support herself. She procures the fresh yam all the way from Atebubu in the Brong Ahafo Region where the price is quite economical. Mary distributes the yam to retailers and food vendors in her community. She sells the rest from a table top stall in the market square. She has been in business for ten years. Mary wants a loan to increase her working capital so she can procure tubers of yam in bulk. She hopes to save more money before she enters into marriage.
