Rukia's story

Rukia has been a firewood and cloth ("khanga"--traditional Tanzanian fabric worn by women--and bedsheets) seller in the Mikunguni neighborhood of Zanzibar for 2 years. She belongs to "Maisha bora" loan group. She currently earns an average monthly profit of US$ 20. Every day she works at her business for 12 hours. She is requesting her first loan from BRAC Tanzania so that she can buy more firewood, "khanga" and bedsheets for her business. She is hoping that through this loan, her profit will increase and she will be able to grow her business and save money.

Rukia is 23 years old, married, and has one child, age 2.
