Abena N. is twenty-seven years old. She is married and currently has no children. Abena lives with her husband in a rented apartment in the small town of Simpa, a farming community a few kilometers from Tarkwa in western Ghana. Her husband is a "galamsey" (independent gold miner prohibited from working land granted to mining companies).
Abena trades in game meat such as deer, grasscutter (or greater cane rat, a 20-pound rodent that lives by riverbeds and feeds on reeds), etc. She buys the meat from the hunters in her own and nearby communities. She sells to customers in the local market and also to food vendors in her community. Abena has been in business for eight years. Her hope is to save enough to supplement her husband's small earnings. She would use the loan to buy game meat in bulk and sell it in nearby markets.
