Shirley J. is 50 years old, married, and lives in Obay, Polanco Zamboamga del Norte. She has 4 children and 2 are in school. One of them is graduating this coming March. According to her, their life’s journey has been full of challenges. Her husband works hard as a carpenter, sewer and driver so that he could give the best of things for his family but still it is not enough. To help out, Shirley began selling snacks at school.
Hearing about Paglaum MPC, she joined on May 17, 2006. Shirley stopped selling snacks in the school and used her first loan was used to open a sari-sari store on their house. She sells firewood and even fruits in her store. Recently, she asked for a $325 loan to buy merchandise for the sari-sari store & to repair their tricycle for her husband’s income. She hopes for the progress and success of her business so that they could raise their standard of living.
About Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative
Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PMPC) was founded in 1992 by the beneficiaries, parents and staff of the Paglaum Community Development Foundation to address economic and livelihood activities for sustainability. The organization operates in the northwestern provinces of Mindanao and Visayas.
In the local vernacular, “paglaum” means “hope.” The initial foundation is dedicated to child development through a holistic approach. The goal is to build self-reliance and expand opportunity so the poorest of the poor can help themselves.
