Mavis's story

Mavis A. is thirty years old, a divorced wife and mother of one child. Mavis lives with her child in Madina, a suburb in Ghana, in a family house. She loves fashion very much and as a result, she trades in jewelry such as earrings, necklaces and other fashionable accessories including beads. She has been selling jewelry for the last eight years.

Mavis buys her stock of jewelry from Togo and Benin because jewelry in these countries is very affordable. She hawks her goods from house to house and also treks to nearby markets to sell. Mavis wants to use the loan to buy jewelry in bulk so she can trek to other markets. Mavis is in a group called “Yayra’ (Blessing) Trust Bank in her community. The members in the group guarantee for one another as collateral to access the loan and provide support to one another in handling repayment.
