Annet N. is the chairperson of the Kalagala Development Group in Mpigi, now seeking its sixth loan from Pearl Microfinance. Both a businesswoman and farmer of many years’ experience, Annet purchases bananas (matooke), beans, and maize for resale in the various area markets and raises poultry and cattle. As well, she grows some matooke, beans and maize for both home consumption and sale.

Annet is the mother of three children, one of whom is still in school, and also the caregiver for five orphans who all attend school. She says she has been successful in her business ventures because of the help and unqualified support of her children and husband.

Previous loans have also been instrumental in the success of her poultry business, enabling her to buy feed and day-old chicks in bulk. Annet is now requesting a loan to assist in the purchase of 300 more layers and 200 more broilers.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
