A loan of $650 helped buy seeds and fertilizers.

Maritza's story

Maritza is 21 years old. She will become a mother very soon. At present she is living at her mother's house with her 6 brothers and sisters. Maritza works at her parent's small farm along with her brothers. They sow potatoes and she likes it because it is very profitable. The sack of potatoes sells for 60 to 65 soles ($18-20), but they have to pay 3 soles ($1) per sack for transportation; for this reason Maritza prefers to wait for the buyers to come to her small farm and this way to save on transportation, because the buyer takes the product. After they harvest the potatoes, they sow pea grains because the land is quite rich in substances that fertilize the ground, therefore they don't need a big investment. They only need to look after it to prevent plagues. Maritza has been a member of MFP (Kiva's partner) for almost 3 years. This is her 6th loan, and she is committed to continue with the same dynamics of work and of punctual payments. The requested money will be use to buy fertilizers, also a bag of pea seeds to sow at the small farm where they will harvest potatoes, in order to increase her production.
